SAN JOSE, Calif. and SHENZHEN, China, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Xilinx, Inc., (Nasdaq: XLNX), the world's leading programmable logic supplier,
opened a new office in Shenzhen, China, to better accommodate the increased
demand for its programmable ICs. China's semiconductor market has been valued
at over US$13 billion in 2002 with a projected increase to US$25 billion in
2005 (1).

Chinese market," said Wim Roelandts, president and CEO of Xilinx. "As our
traditional customers in the telecom and networking industries continue to see
healthy growth in the China market, the Chinese consumer's need for more
advanced consumer electronics and a growing worldwide demand for Chinese
electronic goods are fuelling a strong requisite for PLDs. To fulfill
existing and non-traditional applications requirements for PLDs, and to better
service our existing and potential customers, Xilinx has opened a second
office in Shenzhen, a manufacturing hub for telecom equipment and electronic
goods."
As a leading area for China's high-tech industry with countless consumer
electronic manufacturers and the headquarters of two of China's largest
telecom equipment providers: Huawei and ZTE, Shenzhen is important to Xilinx.
Two local Chinese offices
The Shenzhen office, Xilinx's second in China after the opening in
Shanghai, will enhance its service, technical support and localization
capabilities to further shorten its customers' design cycles for new products.
Allocating resources for support of its strategic customers and distribution
partners with R&D facilities in Shenzhen is a key part of Xilinx strategy in
China.
Xilinx advanced programmable logic devices (PLDs) are used in highly
specialized telecom and networking equipment, and high-tech consumer
electronics. Telecom equipment providers account for more than 50 percent of
Xilinx's business in China where telecom carriers are projected to spend
around US$20 billion dollars per year on telecom infrastructure development
over the next three years (2). The high-tech consumer electronics industry
also represents a new growth area for Xilinx. China's factory output of PCs,
mobile phones, DVD players, digital televisions, digital games and gaming
equipment will hit US$54 billion in 2002 and top US$156 billion by 2006 (3).
"The opening of Xilinx Shenzhen office is an important step for us in our
commitment to China. Xilinx is pushing for advanced technology, faster
performance and lower cost. Our leadership in these areas results in greater
opportunities for us," said David Loftus, managing director of Xilinx Asia
Pacific. "With the tremendous growth in new PLD applications, increase in
indigenous Chinese startups, migration of multinational R&D facilities to
China, as well as steady revenue from our traditional customers, China is our
most important emerging market."
After entering China in the early 1990's, Xilinx expanded rapidly to
become a major provider in the Chinese PLD market. New Xilinx products, such
as the CoolRunner-II series, a true digital CPLD; Virtex-II Pro FPGAs, with
multi-gigabit transceivers and PowerPC; and the Spartan-IIE family, the
market's low cost FPGA solution; set Xilinx apart from the competition.
Xilinx is the fifth largest ASIC/PLD company worldwide with US$1.02
billion in revenues during FY2002. According to Dataquest, it is the single
largest player in the PLD market, commanding 50 percent of the industry's
market share.
